Can You Really Find a Hidden Bug with a Cheap Detector? Why Professional Bug Sweeping Is Different
Hidden cameras, listening devices and tracking equipment have become remarkably easy to buy.
Unfortunately, so have the devices claiming to find them.
Search online for a “bug detector” and you will find everything from £20 handheld gadgets to considerably more sophisticated RF detection equipment. They often make impressive claims about detecting hidden cameras, microphones, GPS trackers and wireless surveillance devices.
But how much reassurance should you actually take from one?
Recent research led by University College London provides an interesting answer. Researchers tested commercially available surveillance-detection products in realistic room environments and found that participants using a detector still missed 58.8% of the hidden surveillance devices. Those searching without a detector missed 66.7%.
That does not mean bug detectors are useless.
It demonstrates something much more important:
owning a detector and conducting a professional bug sweep are not the same thing.
The problem isn't simply detecting radio signals
Many covert surveillance devices communicate using radio frequencies.
These may include:
wireless listening devices;
Wi-Fi hidden cameras;
Bluetooth devices;
cellular or GSM-based bugs;
vehicle tracking devices;
other wireless transmitters.
An RF detector can therefore be an important part of a counter-surveillance examination.
The difficulty is that an ordinary London home or office is already full of radio signals.
Wi-Fi routers, phones, smart televisions, Bluetooth headphones, wireless speakers, laptops, alarm systems, smart-home equipment and neighbouring networks may all produce RF activity.
A detector sounding an alarm does not therefore mean:
“I've found a bug.”
It means:
“I've detected radio-frequency activity.”
Those are very different conclusions.
The job is then to establish what produced that signal, whether it belongs in that environment and whether there is any reason to investigate it further.
This interpretation problem was one of the central findings of the UCL research. The researchers found that many consumer detection products presented users with technical readings that were difficult to understand, while products that helped users interpret what had actually been detected performed substantially better.
The bigger problem: some surveillance devices don't transmit all the time
There is another limitation which is arguably more important.
An RF detector can only detect an RF transmission when there is something to detect.
Consider a vehicle tracker.
Some trackers transmit their position frequently. Others may remain dormant until the vehicle moves, upload their location periodically, or transmit only when requested.
If the tracker isn't transmitting during the few seconds someone passes a detector across the vehicle, the absence of an alert doesn't prove the tracker isn't there.
The same principle applies elsewhere.
A hidden camera may record to an internal memory card rather than transmit wirelessly. A listening device could be activated remotely. Other equipment may transmit intermittently rather than continuously. The UCL research included concealed cameras, microphones and trackers and highlighted the difficulty consumers face when trying to interpret different types of detection technology.
This is why a proper sweep cannot rely on one electronic detector.
What does a professional bug sweep involve?
A professional examination should combine different methods.

Searching for radio-frequency transmissions associated with wireless listening devices, cameras, cellular equipment and tracking technology.
Signal localisation
Where RF activity is identified, progressively narrowing down its physical source rather than simply accepting that “something is transmitting”.
Spectrum analysis where appropriate
Examining the frequency, strength and behaviour of RF activity to help distinguish normal environmental signals from something requiring further investigation.
Optical camera detection
Searching for concealed camera lenses, including cameras which may not currently be transmitting.
Detailed physical examination
Inspecting the room, office, vehicle, fixtures, furniture, electrical equipment and other potential concealment locations.
Assessment of the environment
Understanding which electronic devices should legitimately be present before deciding that an unfamiliar signal or component is suspicious.
It is the combination of these approaches that matters.
A piece of equipment can provide information. The investigator still has to interpret it.
Physical inspection remains extremely important
Electronic equipment tends to receive most of the attention when people think about bug sweeping.
Yet some of the most useful work remains surprisingly low-tech.
A surveillance device has to physically exist somewhere.
That may be underneath a vehicle, behind trim, inside furniture, incorporated into an electrical device, positioned to observe a particular area or introduced as an apparently ordinary object.
A thorough examination therefore considers things such as:
unfamiliar or recently introduced devices;
unexplained wiring or power supplies;
alterations to fixtures or fittings;
unusual electronic components;
plausible positions for audio or visual surveillance;
evidence that a vehicle or room has been interfered with.
This is particularly important with equipment that is dormant or does not transmit RF at all.
Professional TSCM examinations typically combine technical detection with inspection of the physical environment for precisely this reason.
Vehicle tracker sweeps present a particular challenge
Vehicle examinations deserve specific mention because “GPS detector” is a phrase used rather loosely in consumer advertising.
A GPS tracker normally receives its positioning information from satellites. There is therefore not necessarily a GPS signal being transmitted by the tracker for a handheld detector to find.
What may be detectable is the communication used by the tracker to send that location elsewhere — for example cellular, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth transmissions.
But again, it must actually be transmitting.
For this reason, a professional vehicle tracker sweep should combine technical RF examination with a systematic physical inspection of likely installation and concealment areas.
Neither approach should be relied upon exclusively.
Hidden cameras create a similar problem
A wireless camera transmitting video over Wi-Fi may produce an RF signature which specialist equipment can detect.
A camera recording internally to an SD card may not.
That is why optical examination and physical searching remain important.
The same basic principle runs through virtually every type of counter-surveillance work:
No single detection technology covers every possible surveillance device.
Cheap detectors aren't necessarily useless
There is an important distinction here.
The conclusion shouldn't be that every inexpensive detector is worthless.
Some can detect genuine RF activity. Some can help locate Bluetooth devices. Others incorporate optical camera detection.
The problem arises when the device is treated as a definitive test:
“I swept the room, it didn't beep, therefore there isn't a bug.”
That conclusion simply isn't justified.
The UCL study is particularly interesting because it found that the best-performing category consisted of smartphone tools identifying Bluetooth trackers. Those applications missed fewer devices because they presented users with identifiable equipment they could actually investigate, rather than simply presenting an ambiguous signal-strength reading.
In other words, information is useful only when it can be interpreted correctly.
When should you consider a professional bug sweep?
There does not necessarily need to be dramatic evidence that somebody is conducting surveillance.
Common reasons for requesting a sweep can include:
confidential information becoming known unexpectedly;
concern following a relationship or employment dispute;
suspected stalking or harassment;
commercially sensitive meetings or negotiations;
unexplained objects or electronic equipment appearing;
concern that a vehicle may have been fitted with a tracker;
signs that a room, office or vehicle may have been interfered with;
a requirement for additional reassurance before sensitive discussions.
Just as importantly, an unusual electronic noise or an unexpected Wi-Fi connection doesn't automatically mean somebody is spying on you.
A professional examination should investigate the concern objectively rather than begin with the assumption that surveillance must be taking place.
