In this case, we were instructed on behalf of another agency to assist in a suspected infidelity matter involving a woman who had become increasingly concerned that her husband had been dishonest about his whereabouts on a particular date around one month earlier.
Her concerns were supported by several important pieces of digital evidence she had discovered on his phone. These included an Airbnb receipt showing a location and date, a restaurant receipt showing the date and precise time a bill had been paid, a cinema receipt, and a photograph showing him in the company of another woman. Taken together, these findings raised serious alarm, particularly as the husband had told his wife he had been somewhere else entirely on the date in question.
The client’s objective was straightforward. She wanted to know whether CCTV enquiries could place her husband and the woman in the photograph at any of the identified locations. Confirmation at any one of those locations would have been of significant evidential value.
A Careful and Proportionate Investigation
From the outset, this was treated as a highly sensitive CCTV investigation. Any work involving recorded footage must be approached properly, particularly in domestic matters where privacy concerns are heightened. It was essential not only to protect the integrity of the investigation, but also to ensure that the rights of uninvolved third parties were respected throughout.
Our approach was therefore based on necessity, proportionality, and discretion. The intention was never to conduct a broad or speculative trawl through footage. Instead, we focused on making honest, targeted enquiries supported by the evidence already in the client’s possession.
The client had also asked that the investigation be handled in a way that did not alert the subject. That was an important consideration, particularly when making enquiries linked to the Airbnb location, as any direct approach there risked drawing unnecessary attention to the investigation.
The Airbnb Enquiry
The first line of enquiry related to the Airbnb address identified on the receipt. Rather than contacting the host directly, which might have risked the matter being relayed back to the subject, our investigator looked for third-party CCTV cameras in the surrounding area that may have captured the public approach to the property.
This was always the most uncertain element of the investigation. In addition to the challenge of locating suitable cameras, there was no confirmed time of arrival at the address, meaning the potential review window would have been wide. In the event, no nearby CCTV cameras were identified that covered the location in question, and this line of enquiry was concluded without result.
The Restaurant Investigation
Attention then turned to the restaurant identified on the digital receipt, and this proved to be the key location in the case.
On attending the premises, our investigator first established that external CCTV cameras covered the entrance area facing the public domain. This was important because it meant there was potential to confirm whether the two individuals had arrived at and left the restaurant together, without seeking access to internal footage involving other patrons.
The enquiry was conducted openly, professionally, and honestly. Our investigator entered the premises, presented credentials, and explained that he was conducting a private investigation into a domestic matter. It was made clear that the request was limited and proportionate, and that we were not seeking to view internal footage or unnecessarily infringe the privacy of other diners. Instead, the request related only to relevant footage showing the entrance and reception area.
This explanation was given first to the receptionist, then to a supervisor, and finally to the manager. At each stage, credentials were presented and the circumstances were explained properly. After suitable scrutiny and discussion, permission was granted to review the relevant footage.
A Successful Outcome
The key advantage at this location was that the client had preserved the original digital receipt showing the precise time the restaurant bill had been paid. That allowed the enquiry to be narrowed to a specific and relevant timeframe, avoiding any unnecessary review of unrelated footage.
This was important from both an evidential and privacy perspective. It meant the footage review could be tightly focused on the period most likely to capture the arrival and departure of the individuals concerned, rather than involving a broad examination of other patrons.
The review proved successful. The CCTV confirmed that the husband and the woman shown in the photograph attended the restaurant together and were present at the relevant time consistent with the receipt provided by the client. Their movements were established in a way that materially strengthened the evidential picture and supported the client’s concerns.
Sensitive Domestic Investigations Conducted Properly
Although the Airbnb enquiry did not produce a result, the investigation overall was successful in obtaining independent CCTV evidence placing the two individuals together at one of the key locations identified by the client.
This case demonstrates the importance of careful handling in infidelity investigations. It also highlights the value of preserving digital evidence such as receipts, timestamps, and photographs, which can allow enquiries to be narrowed and conducted in a way that is both efficient and ethically sound.
